How To Get A North Carolina Drivers License
North Carolina uses a graduated licensing system with three tiers. You may apply for your learner’s permit when you are 15 and 6 months old. You have to bring a social security card, proof of residency, and the $20 fee to your local North Carolina DMV. You must also bring your driving supervisor with you, and this can be any adult who is 21 years or older and is in good standing. This adult will co-sign your learner’s permit application. You must pass a vision test with a score of 20/40, a sign test, and your 25 question written test with a score of 80 percent or higher.Oral tests are available upon request for people who have trouble reading. If you fail, you can retake the test in 10 days with no additional fee. You must hold your permit for 12 months before moving on to the next level. The next step is your limited provisional license. You must be 16 years old and complete 60 hours of supervised, documented driving with your supervising adult, with 10 of those hours being at night. You must pass a road test, have proof of insurance, and have no moving violations. A $20 fee applies to this tier. The final step is the full license. After you have held your provisional license for 6 months, you can apply for your full license. You must have no convictions or upcoming violations to be eligible, and pay the $20 fee. If you are new to North Carolina, you have 60 days to get a new license. To apply, you must appear in person at one of the state’s driver license offices and take the required tests. You must complete the road sign recognition and vision tests to obtain a North Carolina driver license.
