How To Get A georgia Commercial Drivers License

Georgia residents can apply for their commercial driver’s license at the age of 18. All CDL drivers between the ages of 18 and 21 are restricted to intrastate driving. Hazmat and transporting passengers is restricted to those who are 21 years of age or older.Applicants must have a DOT medical examiner’s card before applying for their CDL.

Individuals who fall into the below categories are disqualified from receiving their CDL:

  • Suspended, revoked, canceled, or denied license.
  • Possessing multiple driver’s licenses.
  • Being convicted of a commercial impaired driving offense in the past 2 years.
  • Being disqualified from commercial driving privileges in another state.

All commercial driver’s license applicants must complete an on-site vision assessment, knowledge test(s), and hands-on skills test. All of these assessments must be passed in order for the applicant to receive their CDL.

georgia CDL License Test Tips

Applicants will need to complete the necessary knowledge assessments for the Class and Endorsement(s) they are seeking to acquire. Class A applicants must complete a 70 question exam. Class B and C applicants must compete a 50 question assessment. Each endorsement requires an additional knowledge test which ranges between 20 and 30 questions. All tests must be passed with a score of 80 percent or greater.A hand-on skills assessment must be performed by all applicants. The skills assessment is comprised of an on-road driving test, vehicle inspection, and basic controls skills test. Individuals must pass all three portions of the skills test to be considered eligible for a commercial driver’s license. Those applying for special vehicle endorsements must operate the type of vehicle the endorsement is for in order to obtain the endorsement.
