The Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) is part of the Department of Public Safety (DPS). The DVS is often referred to as the “Minnesota DMV”, and provides many services related to driver’s licenses, identification, and vehicle registration.

You can contact the DVS for a number of reasons to do with identification and vehicle licensing. This includes getting or renewing a state ID or driver’s license. The DVS also deals with several different kinds of information and can be approached to review data through proper requests.

Minnesota DVS Online Services

If you don't have time to make a trip to your nearest driver's services branch, the state of Minnesota provides online services that will allow you to utilize many of their services from your smartphone or computer.

Online services are split into three sections:

• Driver Services (including applying for/renewing a driver’s license or state ID card and paying reinstatement fees)
• Vehicle Services (like renewing tabs and calculating registration tax)
• Submit Forms (such as responding to letters from driver services or uploading a commercial form)

It is highly recommended that you have a functioning printer available when utilizing online services so you can print copies of all documentation. If not readily available, save documents to a secure location and print them as soon as possible.

The Minnesota DMV provides a number of vital services, far more than just licenses and registration. When you visit a local office you will have access to their full suite of services, including all the following options:

Minnesota DMV FAQ

An enhanced driver’s license or EDL comes with all the privileges of a standard license but also can be used as identification when traveling by land or sea between the United States and Canada, Bermuda, Mexico, and the Caribbean. It can also be used as identification as part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). The TSA will also accept an enhanced license for identification for domestic travel in the United States.

You can renew your Minnesota state driver’s license online using the Minnesota DVS’s online services which are linked above.

A wide range of documents can be used as identification when getting your license. Those with valid Minnesota ID or Minnesota ID that has not expired within five years (with photo) or one year (without photo) can use this. Those without must use a primary and secondary document in conjunction to prove identity. Primary documents include a certified U.S. birth record, a valid U.S. passport, or a permanent resident card with the correct visa stamp. Secondary identification includes a marriage certificate, a driver’s license issued by another state, or a secondary school transcript or above. A full listing of acceptable ID can be found here.
