Motorcycle License

How To Get an Alaska Motorcycle License

Alaska is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and there are few better ways to take in the scenery than on a motorcycle. If you want to take a motorcycle trip through Alaska you’ll need to earn an M1 or M2 endorsement, otherwise known as an Alaska motorcycle license. The two endorsements are as follows:

  • The M1 endorsement is for drivers who wish to operate motorcycles, scooters, and motorized bikes. An M1 applicant needs to be 16 years old and those under 18 will need parental consent and will have to operate with a learner’s permit for six months.
  • The M2 is the basic motorcycle endorsement for license holders 18 and older which allows them to legally operate all of the vehicles listed above.

If you are moving to Alaska and want to maintain your motorcycle endorsement, you’ll need to transfer your credentials within 90 days of your move. If you currently hold a valid motorcycle license from another state and are 16 years or older you’ll need to:

  • Surrender your current license
  • Pass the written Alaska drivers license test
  • Pass the alcohol and drug awareness test
  • Pass a vision test
  • Provide proof of your legal name, date of birth, Alaskan residence and social security number
  • Pay your licensing fee

Another option for earning your Alaska motorcycle license is taking a course through ABATE of Alaska. This group has been offering safety classes since 1991 and successfully completing either their Basic or Basic Rider Course 2 will allow you to earn your endorsement. These courses will also include a knowledge test and a road test to go along with classes and a mandated number of hours of rider instruction. You can learn more on their website if you’re interested.

As part of the licensing process, applicants will have to pass the Alaska motorcycle license test which includes a written DMV test and the on-cycle knowledge test to earn their endorsement.

This portion of your test focuses on how to properly select and use motorcycle safety gear, operate your motorcycle safely, and understand the safety statistics for motorcycle riders.

The Alaska on-cycle skills tests are conducted at certain DMV locations. To schedule your road test online follow this link. Otherwise, you can visit your nearest location to set up your skills test in person. During your test you’ll need to display your ability to control your speed, use the vehicle’s mirrors and brakes, come to a quick stop, create visibility for yourself and make yourself visible to other motorists.
