Drivers License

How To Get An Iowa Drivers License

In Iowa, driver’s licenses are administered by the Iowa Department of Transportation. Drivers in Iowa may apply for a permit if they are at least 14 years old, have the proper identification documentation, a written consent from a parent or legal guardian, pass a vision test and pass a written test. Many schools in Iowa offer written tests, allowing candidates to bypass having to go to the driver’s license service center. The program is called Skip the Trip DOT Test Program.
With a learner’s permit, drivers may drive with an parent, legal guardian, custodian or family member, a driving instructor, or an adult who is 25 years or older, providing that there is written permission from a parent or legal guardian. The supervising adult riding with the driver must possess a valid driver’s license. Candidates who are at least 16 years of age may be eligible for an intermediate license.
Those seeking an intermediate license must have completed a driver’s education course, held a clean driving record, held an instruction permit for at least 12 months, have written consent from a parent or legal guardian and have completed 20 hours of supervised driving, including 2 hours of night driving. Full driver’s licenses in Iowa are available to those who are at least 17 years old, have meet the above conditions of the intermediate license, and have had written consent from their parent or legal guardian. Additionally, those seeking a Full driver’s license must complete 10 hours of supervised driving, with 2 of those hours being night driving.
