How To Get A connecticut Commercial Drivers License

Those looking to obtain a Connecticut CDL must have a valid operator’s license and the following requirements below. Applicants between the ages of 18 and 21 can apply for an intrastate CDL license. Only those who are 21 years of age or older may apply for an interstate CDL as well as Hazmat, Doubles/Triples, Passenger, and School Bus Endorsements. All CDL applicants must have a medical examiner’s certificate, or DOT physical card, to be eligible for a CDL. In addition, all applicants must complete a self-certification form which describes the types of vehicles that the applicant intends to drive with their commercial driver’s license.

Any applicants who have the following are disqualified from receiving their commercial driver’s license.

  • If you are subject from receiving CDL driving privileges in another state.
  • If you have an impaired driving conviction in a commercial vehicle in the past 24 months.
  • If your license is currently suspended, revoked, denied, or canceled.
  • If you have more than one driver’s license.

CDL applicants are required to complete at least one knowledge assessment and a skills test to ensure their proficient understanding and knowledge of the commercial driving laws in the state of Connecticut.

connecticut CDL License Test Tips

All applicants are required to complete written knowledge tests to obtain their CDL. Those looking for a Class A CDL will need to complete a 70-question test. Those looking for Class B and C CDLs will need to complete a 50-question general knowledge test. Those seeking endorsements and removal of the Air Brake Restriction will be responsible for taking a knowledge test for each endorsement or removal sought. These tests range between 20 and 30 questions. All tests must be passed with a score of 80 percent or greater.All applicants must complete a skills test in accordance with the federal regulations. Each skills test is comprised of a pre-trip inspection, driving assessment, and basic control skills. All three parts must be passed in order for the applicant to receive their commercial driver’s license. Those seeking endorsements must take the skills test in the vehicle type their intended endorsement is for.
