Want To Know More About The Montana DMV?

Montana MVD Online Services

When you’re short on time you can try using Montana’s online DMV services. For many common tasks you can use the online portal to get the documents you need or complete applications from the comfort of your home. Online services include online license renewal, driver history search, and vehicle registration renewal. Other services are available here.

When using online services we recommend printing a copy or saving to your hard drive as a PDF so you have a copy of your confirmation.

You can pay online via Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

Services for drivers in Montana are divided between driver exam stations and the county treasurer for motor vehicle offices. The exam stations are for scheduling permit and licensing exams, as well as obtaining original licenses and renewals. The treasurer’s offices handle:

  • Registrations
  • Titles
  • Plates

You can also schedule in-person visits online, which can make for a much faster visit at your local office. Before visiting a location in person we recommend that you download and fill out any necessary forms you need. If not, you may be pushed to the back of the line after you arrive.

Montana DMV FAQ

What is REAL ID in Montana?

Montana offers REAL ID as an option for each individual. This means that drivers can choose to have licenses and IDs issued in Montana that meet the requirements for federal identification for domestic flights and access into Canada. This is for security reasons, and by October 2021, all identification must be compliant if you want to use it for the TSA or other federal agencies. It is completely optional for Montana residents.

Can I renew my Montana state driver’s license online?

Yes. You can renew online by following the link above in the online services section.

What documents do I need to get a Montana state driver’s license?
A wide range of documents can be used as identification when getting your license. It depends on whether or not you wish to register for REAL ID. If you want a REAL ID, you need proof of identity, proof of lawful U.S. residency, your SSN, and two documents to prove Montana residency. In addition, marriage certificates, etc., can be used for name changes. A valid U.S. passport is the most reliable form of identification, but a full list can be found here.
