Drivers License

How To Get A maine Drivers License

In order to apply for a driving permit in Maine you must be 15 years of age and accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who will need to co-sign your Main learner’s permit application form. Testing is administered at your local Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles office. You must provide two documents to prove your identity, proof of residency, proof of your social security number and if you are under 18 years of age, you will need to provide a certificate of drivers education.
You will be required to take a vision screening test. You should wear any corrective lenses during the exam. You will not be required to take a physical but there are physical standards that must be met. If you are under 21 years of age, you must hold an instruction permit for at least 6 months and get at least 35 hours of practice driving including 5 hours of night driving. If you are over 21 years of age, you must wait at least 3 months to apply for your Maine driver’s license.
The written test consists of 30 questions that may cover any part of the Maine driving manual. Pay particular attention to drinking and driving laws, traffic laws, regulations, driving skills, and vehicle handling. Identifying and understanding highway signs is also important. You must correctly answer 24 of the 30 questions to pass the test. If you do not pass the test, your examiner will tell you when you are able to retake the test.
The testing fee for a Maine driver’s permit is $10.00. A valid learner’s permit from another state will be accepted in Maine. No road test is required if you already hold a driver’s license from another state. You may drive in Maine with your out of state driver’s license as long as it is valid or until you establish residency.
