How To Get A delaware Commercial Drivers License

Those who are 18 years of age and older can apply for their CDL. To receive privileges for out-of-state driving, doubles/triples, hazmat, and transporting vehicles, residents must be at least the legal age of 21 years old. All CDL applicants are required to comply with the MCSR 49 CFR 391.41 section of the Federal Codes regarding commercial driving medical requirements. Individuals must present a medical examiner’s certificate at the time of their CDL application.

Any of the following will automatically disqualify an applicant from receiving their CDL:

  • Having a revoked, suspended, canceled, or denied driver’s license.
  • Being convicted in the past 24 months of driving impaired in a commercial vehicle.
  • Having disqualified CDL privileges in another state.
  • Possessing more than one operator’s license.

All applicants are required to complete an on-site vision test, knowledge test(s), and a practical skills test. All tests must be successfully passed before a Delaware resident can be issued their CDL.

Delaware residents must complete, at the minimum, one knowledge test to be considered eligible for a CDL. Depending on the Class and the Endorsements that are sought, individuals may have to undergo additional testing. All tests must be passed with a score of 80 percent or more. General knowledge tests for Class B and C drivers are 50 questions. Those seeking their Class A will have 50 general knowledge questions with an additional 20 questions about combination driving. Endorsements and the Air Brake Restriction Removal require additional knowledge tests that are between 20 and 30 questions each.Once an individual passes their knowledge test they are given a commercial learning permit (CLP). After waiting 14 days, the holder can take their skills test. This is a three part test that assesses the individual’s ability to operate a commercial motor vehicle. The test includes a pre-trip inspection, a driving test, and a basic controls test. All three parts must be successfully passed for the applicant to be eligible for their CDL. If applying for a special endorsement, the individual must take their test in the vehicle the endorsement is for.
