How To Get A Vermont Drivers License

Vermont has a three tier graduated license program. Once you turn 15, you have to apply for your learner’s permit. You have to go to your local DMV and show proof you are enrolled in a driver’s education course. Bring proof of your identity, birth date, legal presence, Social Security number, and residence. Take a vision test and take a 20-question multiple choice written knowledge test. You’ll have to answer at least 16 questions correctly to pass. If you fail, you can retake it two more times in a 90-day period. You have to wait one day between attempts and pay a reexamination fee.The last step is to complete an Application for License and Permit, and your parent or guardian must co-sign this. Before you leave, you will have to pay the $32 written test fee, the $19 road test, and the $20 learner’s permit fee. Next, complete your driver’s education course and drive an additional 40 hours with your driver’s education teacher or an adult who is at least 25 years old. Ten of your supervised hours must be done at night, and they all have to be documented. You can move on to step two after you hold your permit for one year.To obtain your junior driver’s license, you must be 16 years old and have completed 30 hours of classroom instruction plus six hours of behind the wheel training, and six hours of observation. You will also complete and document an additional 40 hours of driving practice with an adult. Once this if finished, call the DMV to schedule your road test. Go to your local DMV and fill out the Application for License and Permit with your parent or guardian’s signature. Bring proof of residence, proof of identity, social security card, driver’s education certificate, and driving log. Finally, take and pass the road test, and pay the $19 road test fee and the $32 provisional license fee.To obtain your unrestricted license, you have to be 18 years old and go back to your local DMV and fill out another application for a new license. • For the driving test, you’ll only feel confident if you’ve really put your time in behind the wheel. If there are particular skills you’re worried about, use your time with experienced drivers to practice those skills. Many new drivers struggle with parking, so finding an empty lot to practice skills like parallel parking can help you build confidence.
  • Get a good night’s sleep before the exam. Any distractions can prove costly and being tired leads to poor decisions behind the wheel and can leave you distracted while taking the written portion of the driving test. Set yourself up for success with a good night’s sleep and making sure you have something to eat before the test.
