Choosing a CDL School

When selecting a truck driving school, there are a few key factors to keep in mind.

  • Reputation of the school
  • Distance from where you live
  • Cost

Reputation of the school

Not all truck driving schools are the same – some have been around for decades and have a long-standing relationship with trucking companies in Delaware and beyond. Other “schools” are run by companies, who offer “free truck driver training”. The cost of training is ultimately taken out of your wages, and you often need to enter into one to two year employment contracts with the company.

Distance from where you live

While Delaware is not a big state, residents may have to travel far to find a good trucking school. Luckily, most programs last only a few weeks and you can either get used to spending time on the road or find accommodations in the area. If you are lucky to live close to a good truck driving school, you should be able to work out a training schedule that fits your timeframe. Many programs are open on weekends or after work hours on weekdays.

Cost

CDL school isn’t always cheap. Prices can range anywhere from $2,000 – $10,000, although most are within the $4,000 – $7,000 range. You may be able to qualify for grants and scholarships through the Delaware Higher Education Office. Check their website regularly or reach out to them to ask about any scholarships or grants that could be applied towards a CDL school.
