How To Get A Virginia Drivers License

In Virginia, you have to be 15 years and 6 months old plus have your parent’s permission to fill out the Virginia Driver’s License application. Bring proof of identity, proof of Virginia residence, social security number, and legal presence. Next, pay the $7 fee and take the two-part knowledge test. The first part traffic signs, and you must get ten out of ten questions correct before moving on to the 40 question general knowledge exam. You will need an 80 percent or better to pass. There is also a vision test, and there are special accommodations for people who have trouble reading. If you fail the test, you can retake it in 15 days and pay a $2.00 reexamination fee.While holding your permit, you must log at least 45 hours of practice driving with 15 hours at night, before you can move on to obtain your restricted driver’s license. You must drive with an adult who has a valid license is at least 21 years old or older.To obtain your restricted driver’s license, you must be 16 and 3 months old and have had your learner’s permit for at least 9 months. You have to produce your completed Driver’s Education Certificate, your driving log, a Virginia Driver’s License application with a parent or guardian signature, proof of identity, legal presence, Virginia residency, and Social Security number. You have to pass another vision test, along with a road skills test. You will keep this license until you turn 18, then it will automatically change to an unrestricted license.If you’re new to the state, you have 60 days to switch your license over. Go to the DMV in person and pass a vision test, and fill out a Driver’s License and Identification Card Application. Bring and show proof of your identity, social security card, and Virginia residency. The last two steps are surrendering your old license and paying the $32 fee.

How To Pass the Virginia Driver's License Test

A surprising number of people fail the Virginia driver’s license test on the first try, and usually it’s because they didn’t prepare correctly. Here are some helpful tips to follow to make sure you don’t find yourself taking the test a second time.

  • Practice tests are your friend! This site and others have massive databases of questions in their DMV practice test and Virginia permit test simulators. Oh, and they’re free. Take them until you can recite the answers in your sleep, and know what every road sign means. The resources are available, use them!

  • Spend more time than you think you need to with the Virginia Drivers Manual. Make sure you’ve got a copy of the current year and go through it in detail to make sure you there are no surprises on exam day.
  • Practice like you’ll be tested. If possible drive the same car and in the same area where you’ll be tested on exam day. If you’re familiar with the vehicle, speed limits, and potential hazards you’ll be much more comfortable and less prone to making silly mistakes.
  • Once you’ve got yourself in order give your car a review the night before the test as well. You’ll only be helping yourself if you make sure the windshield and windows are clean, your mirrors adjusted, and your AC, turn signals, wipers, lights, defrost, emergency brake, horn and hazard lights are all in good working condition.
