How To Get A Illinois Drivers License

In Illinois, driver’s licenses are administered by the Illinois Secretary of State. Applicants who are 15 years of age in Illinois may undertake the Graduated Driver License Program. Parental or legal guardians must consent to those obtaining the permit. This with a permit must be enrolled in a driver’s education program, pass a vision test and a written test. Drivers can only drive during the following times: Sun.-Thurs., 10 p.m.-6 a.m.; Fri.-Sat., 11 p.m.-6 a.m. (local curfews may differ) Drivers must practice for at least 50 hours, including 10 hours at night, supervised by a parent or adult who is at least 21 years of age. The permit is valid for 2 years, and must be held for a minimum of 9 months. Permit drivers must have a clean driving record during their learning period.

Drivers who are the ages of 16 to 17 must undergo an Initial Licensing Phase. Those that have logged their 50 hours of driving time must have this time certified by their parents or legal guardians. They also must have completed their driver’s education course. They must also have driving hours restrictions Sun.-Thurs., 10 p.m.-6 a.m.; Fri.-Sat., 11 p.m.-6 a.m. (local curfews may differ).Once drivers have a license, for the first 12 months of driving, or when the driver turns 18, they can only have one passenger who is under the age of 20, unless that passenger is a sibling, stepsibling, child or step child of the driver.

Those applicants who are between the ages of 18 and 20 may possess a driver’s license in the Full Licensing phase. Those drivers who did not take a certified driver’s education course must take a 6 hour adult driver education course. Additionally, those drivers under the age of 19 may not use a cell phone while driving unless it is an emergency.
