How To Get A kentucky Drivers License
In order to apply for a driving permit in Kentucky you must be at least 16 years of age. You may apply at your local Kentucky Circuit Court Clerk’s office. You will need to provide your Birth Certificate, Social Security Card and proof of residency. If you are under 18 years of age, you will also need to provide a School Compliance Verification Form and an Application Form signed by your parent or legal guardian. You will be required to take a vision test. If you use corrective lenses, you will need to wear them for the exam.After receiving your permit, if you are under 21 years of age, you will be required to hold it for 180 days before applying for your road test. You must have 60 hours of practice behind the wheel with at least 10 hours of driving practice at night. You have one year to take a 4 hour Graduated Licensing education course. If you are over 21 years of age, you will need to hold your permit for 30 days before applying for your license.There are 40 questions on the computerized exam that may cover any part of the Kentucky driver’s manual. Pay particular attention to road signs and rules of the road. The test will also cover lanes for turning, pavement markings, roundabouts, parking, drinking and driving laws and driving point system. You must correctly answer 32 of the 40 multiple choice questions to pass the test. You must also answer 8 of 10 road sign questions correctly. If you do not pass the test, you may take it again the next day if you wish.The testing fee for a Kentucky driver’s permit is $10.00. Kentucky does allow driving with an out of state learner’s permit. If you become a resident of Kentucky, you must exchange your out of state learner’s permit for a Kentucky learner’s permit. You may drive in Kentucky with your out of state license as long as it is valid. You must trade your out of state driver’s license for an Kentucky driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency in Kentucky.

The written test portion of earning your Kentucky driver’s license and the permit test can be nerve wracking. However, if you want to pass the permit test and written test on the first try, we recommend paying close attention to the following tips.
- Get prepared by taking a slew of practice tests. This site is an excellent resource, but it’s one of many. Do some Google searches like “practice permit test KY” and “Kentucky practice driving test” and build a list of resources that can get you used to answering the same types of questions you’ll see on your big day.
- Get extremely familiar with the Kentucky driver’s manual. Make sure you have a copy of this document and go through it in depth to make sure you have a detailed understanding of Kentucky traffic laws, procedures and rules of the road. What you need to know can definitely be found in the manual. If you don’t have a copy, you can download it via the link below.
- Don’t shoot yourself in the foot. Have a plan of attack the day of the test to make sure you arrive on time, have something to eat before hand, and have any other distractions taken care of so you’re focused on one goal during the test. A little pre-planning can make a big difference in how you perform on exam day.
