How To Get A Vermont Motorcycle License
In order to operate a motorcycle in Vermont, you are required to obtain a motorcycle endorsement by the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This means that you must have a valid Vermont Driver’s License, Junior Driver’s License, or Commercial Driver License (CDL) to apply for a motorcycle endorsement. You will be required to attend a motorcycle awareness program and pass a knowledge test and skills test.
Applicants who are 16 and 17-years old may apply for a Motorcycle Learner Permits by completing a 4-hour Vermont Motorcycle Awareness Program training course or passing a knowledge test, and taking the on-cycle skills test. These permits will be valid for 120 days and can be renewed twice. If you are looking for another option to gain experience on a motorcycle and learn more about operating it, you can take a 15-hour Basic Rider Course.
You will perform riding exercises, participate in classroom discussions, and learn the basics of operating a motorcycle on the road. Those who complete this course will be exempt from taking the Vermont motorcycle knowledge and skills examinations to obtain their motorcycle endorsement. However, if you pass the knowledge test but fail the skills test, you will only be issued a Motorcycle Learner Permit. You can visit their website to sign up for classes and see the schedule.
If you are new to Vermont and already have a valid Motorcycle license from another state, you will not need to take the knowledge and on-skills test again. More information can be found on Vermont’s DMV website using the link above.

Vermont Motorcycle License Test Tips
You can take a Vermont Motorcycle practice test to help you prepare for the knowledge test. All of the questions in this practice test will come from information gathered from the Motorcycle Operator’s Manual. The manual comes with safety tips, rules, and regulations when operating a motorcycle. You want to be sure that you are best prepared for the knowledge test and take your time reading and practicing. The knowledge tests consist of 25 questions. You must get 20 questions answered correctly, for a score of 80% or higher. If you fail, you will need to wait one day before you may take the exam again. While you take the Vermont Motorcycle practice test, be sure to read through each question and its choices of answers carefully because they will be similar to what you see on the knowledge test.
After reading the motorcycle operator’s manual, you will be a much more knowledgeable rider and gain a sense of your limits on a motorcycle and riding safely. You will need to take this test before moving forward to the on-cycle skills test. Taking the knowledge test will ensure that you understand how to reduce your chances of a crash and safely operate a motorcycle. Some questions that you will see on the knowledge test will be about best practices for carrying passengers and cargo and developing effective street strategies.
