Tips for selecting a CDL school
It’s always a good idea to call around and talk with at least three different truck driving schools. Many schools offer accommodation and food, so distance from home doesn’t necessarily need to be a factor.
Go with a school that has an excellent reputation in the industry. This means a few things.
- Great job placement record
- Positive online reviews
- Ideally recommended by other truck drivers
It’s important that the school you attend has a good history of helping its students find jobs. Highly reputable CDL schools are well connected in the trucking industry, as they supply companies with fresh applicants for job openings. Ask the school what trucking companies their students often go to after graduating.
When talking with the schools, be sure to ask them about their training equipment. You will want to train using tractor trailers that are similar to what you’ll be using on the job, so training with outdated semi-trucks isn’t a great idea. You should also inquire about the number of hours spent training, their training field, and their current instructors.
CDL Test Locations
While searching for schools, it’s a good idea to become familiar with the process of the CDL written test as well as the driving test. The driving test must be taken at a designated facility, so it’s important to identify the testing location that you will eventually use in order to obtain your license. We have provided free CDL practice tests for Washington residents that you can use in preparation for your written test. Read through the CDL handbook provided by the Washington State Department of Licensing, and study any material provided by your truck driving school. Remember, there are two different tests that you will need to pass, so it is important to study and practice as much as you can so you can obtain your license on the first try.
