How To Get A North Dakota Motorcycle License

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) requires motorcycle license applicants to pass a knowledge test and the on-cycle skills test. These exams will test your ability and knowledge to safely operate a motorcycle on the nation’s highways. NDDOT requires that those who are ages 16-17 years old complete a Basic Rider Course (BRC) with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and will need to bring that completion card in to a ND Driver’s License Site when applying for a permit or license. While those over 18 years old are not required to take a Basic Rider Course to obtain their driver’s license, they do have the option to take this course in lieu of the road test.

As a new resident of North Dakota, there will be some paperwork you will need to fill out in order to transfer your official motorcycle license from another state. You will be exempt from taking driver education courses or test requirements. More information and concerns on this can be found on the North Dakota Department of Transportation website.

The North Dakota Motorcycle Safety Program (NDMSP) is a safe and alternative way for interested Motorcycle license applicants to learn the basics of operating a motorcycle. A certified Rider Coach will offer hands on instruction with each student and provide classroom training on things every motorcyclist should know. You can sign up for classes here. If you successfully complete this course, you will be given a completion card from your coach and North Dakota that will allow you to waive your on-cycle skills test.

North Dakota Motorcycle License Test Tips

The motorcycle knowledge test is the first exam you’ll need to take and pass before you can schedule your on-cycle skills exam. This exam will make sure you understand the importance of following the laws when operating a motorcycle. There will be questions regarding things like a motorcyclist’s responsibilities on the road, handling dangerous surfaces, and basic vehicle control. This exam may also have questions about the statistics of riding a motorcycle, so be sure you understand that as well.

The on-cycle skills test can be taken at one of the eight North Dakota road test locations. The test can be scheduled here. It will take about 15-20 minutes and you will be asked to demonstrate your skills on operating a motorcycle. The examiner may ask you to perform certain skills such as maneuvering, stopping, and accelerating on a bike. Pay close attention to what is being asked of you because you will be scored on the task at hand.
