How To Get A montana Commercial Drivers License
Montana residents are eligible to apply for a CDL to operate commercial vehicles within Montana if they are at least 18 years old. Residents who are at least 21 years old are eligible to apply for a CDL to operate commercial vehicles outside of Montana. To operate a commercial vehicle in Montana, applicants must provide proof that they are medically fit.
The following documents must be completed before applicants attend the first MVD appointment for a CDL.
- (Form MCSA-5876) Medical Examiner’s Certificate
- (Form 21-1201DG) CDL Self-Certification Classification and Medical Documentation (This form must be completed by a FCSA-approved physician.)
Drivers whose driver’s licenses have been revoked, suspended, denied or canceled are not eligible for a CDL in Montana. The following CDL endorsements are available:
H – Hazardous Material
N – Tank Vehicles
P – Passenger Vehicles
S – School Bus
T – Towing a Double or Triple Trailer
All Montana applicants must pass a general knowledge test before they are eligible to take the skills test. There are 50 questions on the Montana general knowledge test, and applicants must answer 40 questions correctly. For each endorsement, there is a test that must be taken by applicants. The passing score for these tests is 80 percent.

The Montana skills test includes a vehicle inspection, basic control skills and driving. Applicants must pass each section. Military veterans and current members of the military can waive the skills test if they submit an application. To be eligible for this waiver, applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled in any branch of the military or within 12 months of having left the service.
- Have documented experience operating commercial vehicles or military equipment
Military waiver applicants and their commanding officers must complete (For CDL-SK TST WVR) Application for Military Skills Test Waiver to be considered for a waiver. Applicants who are granted a waiver for the skills test are required to pass the written test and pay appropriate licensing fees.
