How To Get A Michigan Motorcycle License

Surrounded by the Great Lakes, Michigan’s shorelines make for an amazing road trip, particularly if you have a Michigan motorcycle license. Riders can take a state sponsored motorcycle safety course, pass it, and then apply for their CY endorsement at their local Secretary of State after passing a vision test. Or, they can receive a temporary Michigan motorcycle drivers permit after passing the written knowledge test to receive a temporary instruction permit from the Secretary of State and then take a third party motorcycle skills test to gain their certification.

If you have a currently valid motorcycle license when you move to Michigan you can contact your local Secretary of State office to learn what your options are for transferring or applying for a new Michigan motorcycle license. You can find your nearest Michigan SoS location here along with their office hours.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) certifies RiderCoaches in Michigan to become expert riders who also have the ability to train other riders at approved rider education programs. To become a RiderCoach you can find more information on the Michigan Secretary of State website. Michigan is somewhat unique in that it outsources all of its training courses. To find the location closest to you, you can use the motorcyclist training site locator on their website.

Michigan Motorcycle License Test Tips

The Michigan motorcycle license knowledge test is administered at a secretary of state office. The test contains 20 multiple choice questions and is based on information from the motorcycle operator’s manual, which you can download a copy in the link above. To pass the test you’ll need to answer at least 16 questions correctly. To pass the test you’ll need to have a firm understanding of safe riding practices, understand road signs, and general rules of the road while riding a motorcycle.

One of the final steps you’ll need to take to earn your motorcycle license is passing the Michigan on-cycle skills tests. The rider skills test conducted in Michigan by a certified test examiner from a third-party provider approved by the state of Michigan. Skills you’ll be expected to demonstrate include avoiding engine stalls, managing weaving in and out of cones, stopping, making U-turns, and making defensive swerves. To find a skills testing location and schedule your test, you can use the Secretary of State website.
