How To Get A louisiana Commercial Drivers License

Applicants looking to obtain their CDL for interstate driving and any Hazardous Materials Endorsement must be 21 years of age or older. Those who are 18 years of age, but under the age of 21 may apply for an intrastate CDL. These individuals are not able to operate doubles, triples, loaded buses, or HazMat vehicles. All applicants must have a completed Form DPSMV2219 from their medical examiner to apply for their CDL.

There are certain situations in which an individual will automatically be disqualified from receiving their CDL. These are listed below.

  • Having CDL privileges in another state disqualified.
  • Being convicted of driving impaired in a commercial vehicles 24 months prior to the application.
  • Having more than one driver’s license.
  • Having a denied, canceled, revoked, or suspended driver’s license.

All commercial driver’s license applicants must pass a practical skills CDL test and one or more knowledge tests.

louisiana CDL License Test Tips

Each applicant will be required to successfully pass one or more knowledge tests in order to move onto the practical skills test to receive their CDL. A passing score must be received for each test taken and is considered at 80 percent or higher. General knowledge tests are 50 to 70 questions in length and are required when applying for any Louisiana Class CDL. Those looking to have endorsements on their CDL will need to pass one additional knowledge test per endorsement.

Each applicant, regardless of Class, is required to pass a three-part practical skills test. This includes a pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and an on-road driving test. This test ensures that the applicant is able to inspect a vehicle for safety, operate the vehicle, and can handle the vehicle with different road situations.
