How To Get A kansas Commercial Drivers License

Applicants can apply for their CDL at the age of 18 years old. However, they may not drive out of the state of Kansas until they are 21 years of age. In addition, applicants must be 21 years of age or older to obtain their HazMat Endorsement and Double / Triple Endorsement. All CDL applicants must complete a Medical Self-Certification form and provide a valid DOT medical card to be eligible.

If an applicant falls into any of the descriptions below they are disqualified from obtaining their CDL.

  • You have more than one driver’s license.
  • Your driver’s license is currently suspended, revoked, denied, or canceled.
  • You have been convicted of driving impaired within the past 24 months.
  • You are disqualified from your CDL driving privileges in another state.

All Kansas CDL applicants must complete both a knowledge test and skills test to be eligible for their CDL. Specific Classes and Endorsements will require multiple tests.

kansas CDL License Test Tips

All applicants are required to take at least one general knowledge test that displays their acquired knowledge about commercial driving. This test is comprised of 50 general knowledge questions. Applicants must get a score of 80 percent or better to be eligible for their CDL Permit. Those seeking a Class A CDL will be required to complete an additional 20 questions regarding commercial combination driving. Applicants who are seeking endorsements are required to take one test per endorsement sought. These tests range between 20 and 30 questions. Applicants must receive a score of 80 percent or better to obtain their endorsement.

The skills test is comprised of three separate assessments. These include the pre-trip inspection, basic operating skills test, and the basic driving skills test. All of these must be successfully passed in order for the driver to obtain their CDL. Those seeking specific vehicle-related endorsements must take the skills test in the type of vehicle they are looking for an endorsement in.
