Motorcycle License

How To Get A Colorado Motorcycle License

If you're thinking about riding a motorcycle in the state of Colorado you must first get the appropriate motorcycle license. In order to get this, you must pass a two-part test which includes both a written exam and skills sections. Once achieved you will either get the M or 3 on your license, which signifies you are able to drive both two and three-wheel motorcycles or just three-wheel motorcycles respectively. If you just want to practice, there is an instructional permit you can get by just getting through the written portion of the exam.

Typically motorcycle credentials are just reserved for those 18 and older but exceptions are possible for those younger. Minors are allowed to get a license if they hold an instructional permit for 12 months prior to getting the endorsement. Those under 16 must be under the direct supervision of an instructor at all times while operating a motorcycle.

If you are uncomfortable with the prospect of learning to drive a motorcycle and want some guidance then there are motorcycle safety courses. Called Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST), these courses are designed to walk you through motorcycle operation, general safety, and how the motorcycle works. These courses include both classroom and hands-on demonstrations. Once this class is passed students are given a certification of completion which can be given to the local DMV to show that they are eligible for a motorcycle license.

If you just moved to the state of Colorado and already have your motorcycle endorsement from another state you may be able to waive any testing. Get in contact with your local DMV for more information.

Colorado Motorcycle License Test Tips

The first part of the motorcycle endorsement is the written exam. The purpose of this knowledge test is to make sure you are familiar with basic traffic signals, safe riding practices, and are familiar with your motorcycle. In order to get a pass on this test, you must correctly answer 20 of the 25 questions. Armed with both the operator's manual and the practice tests on this website, you can be sure that you are ready to conquer the knowledge test and take that first step in getting a full-blown motorcycle certification.

Once you pass the written exam and believe you are comfortable with riding a motorcycle you then need to do the on-cycle skills test. This short test will show the state of Colorado you are safe and conscientious enough to ride a motorcycle on the road. In the test, you will do basic things like weaving in and out of cones, stop in the proper location, and show other common traffic maneuvers like sharp turns, u-turns, and so forth. In order to sign up for a test, get in contact with your local DMV.
