How To Get A colorado Commercial Drivers License
Colorado residents the age of 18 or older can apply for their commercial driver’s license. Those between the ages of 18 and 21 are restricted to intrastate driving. Individuals must be 21 years or older to receive their Hazmat, School Bus, or Doubles/Triples Endorsements. All applicants must possess a DOT medical card issued by a FMCSA certified medical examiner in order to be eligible for their CDL.
Any applicants that fall under the following conditions are automatically disqualified from receiving a CDL.
- Having more than one driver’s license.
- Being disqualified for commercial driving privileges in another state.
- Being convicted in the past two years of driving a commercial vehicle impaired.
- Having a suspended, canceled, denied, or revoked driver’s license.
All Colorado residents who are seeking to get their commercial driver’s license must pass both one or more knowledge tests as well as a practical skills test.

All applicants are required to take one or more knowledge tests to display their comprehension of the commercial driving law. Class A, B, and C applicants must complete a 50 question assessment. Class A applicants are responsible for completing an additional 20 questions all based on the subject of combination driving. Applicants seeking endorsements will be required to complete a knowledge test specific to the endorsement sought. The endorsement tests range between 20 and 30 questions. All applicants must receive a score of 80 percent or higher to pass a knowledge test.Applicants for a Colorado CDL must complete a skills test is order to receive their CDL. The skills assessment is comprised of an on-road test, vehicle inspection, and basic controls skills test. Applicants who are applying for endorsements are required to complete the skills test with the type of vehicle the endorsement is intended for.
