How To Get A Montana Motorcycle License
Operating a motorcycle in Montana means that you’ll need to take a written and on-cycle skills test to obtain a motorcycle endorsement. You’ll need to first pass the written test in order to schedule the road skills test with the Department of Justice Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) of Montana. These tests are important because it will give you an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to ride a motorcycle safely and your knowledge of motorcycle-driving situations that you might experience on the road. Anyone who is 15-16 years old will also need to pass an on-site driver’s education course, in addition to the written and road tests before applying for an M endorsement.
If you just moved to Montana, or are considering a move to Montana and are licensed to drive a motorcycle in another state, a driver examiner may waive the written and road tests at their discretion. If you have more questions about the process, you can contact your local MVD location.
The Montana Motorcycle Rider Safety (MMRS) courses offer riders of all levels a chance to learn how to safely operate their motorcycles with riding coaches. The Basic RiderCourse 2 (BRC2) will allow riders to enhance their riding ability and work toward obtaining their motorcycle endorsement on their Montana license. Those who pass this course offered at various locations in Montana, will have their skills test waived by the MVD. If you are interested in taking the MMRS course, you can view and register for classes here.
