How To Get A Minnesota Motorcycle License

The Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety (a division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety) has a laundry list of requirements you’ll need to meet before becoming a licensed rider in the state. You’ll need to complete a Basic Rider course at a Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center, pass the Minnesota motorcycle test (the written knowledge permit test). Once you’ve earned your Minnesota motorcycle permit you can take the Basic Road Course Skills test, pay for your license and you’re good to go. If you don’t have a valid license you could receive a substantial fine or even jail time if you’re caught riding in Minnesota.

If you have a currently valid motorcycle license when you move to Minnesota you can earn your license endorsement when you apply for your Minnesota license. All you’ll need to do is pass the state’s motorcycle operator permit knowledge test and pay your endorsement fee. To do so, just visit your nearest Driver and Vehicle Services location.

Outside of taking the state run Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center courses, there are also alternative programs that can help you earn a valid Minnesota motorcycle license. One such course is through the Rider Academy, which has been offering small classes to riders from Minnesota and Wisconsin since 2006. Minnesota Motorcycle License Test Tips

Once you’ve completed your basic rider course the next hurdle to clear is the written test. This knowledge test consists of questions pertaining to the state’s driving laws, rules of the road, recognition of road signs, and other information specific to two-wheeled vehicles. The test consists of 40 questions and you’ll need to get 32 correct to earn your instruction permit. Each practice test on this site is designed to provide similar questions to what you’ll see on the Minnesota motorcycle license test. These tests are 100% free, so feel free to take them as often as you like from your computer or mobile device.

The Minnesota on-cycle skills tests are conducted at Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services locations. You’ll be expected to demonstrate the ability to weave through cones, turn from a stop, demonstrate a U-turn, swerve around obstacles, and come to a quick stop. Ultimately, your skills at riding a motorcycle will be scored by your test proctor, so looking into gaining some driving practice would be helpful along with all of your studying.
