Motorcycle License

How To Get A Louisiana Motorcycle License

Motorcycles can be fun but are only legal to drive if you have the proper credentials. Getting those credentials in the state of Louisiana requires passing both a knowledge test and an on-cycle skills examination. Once passed you'll be given an "M" endorsement on your license which certifies that you are able to safely drive a motorcycle over 5 horsepower in the state of Louisiana. Applicants must have a valid Louisiana driver's license or learner's permit before attempting a motorcycle endorsement. Those that are 15 or 16 years of age are allowed a restricted license that allows driving only within a three-mile radius of their residence. Learner's permits are available for those that pass just the knowledge portion of the endorsement test. Before trying the skills test you must bring a motorcycle with a current license plate, insurance, and inspection sticker.

Going through an approved motorcycle safety course can be a great way to get the proper training to drive a motorcycle on the roads of Louisiana. The Basic Rider Course is a 15-hour course that is perfect for beginners and returning motorcyclists. This course is designed to teach applicants everything they need to know about motorcycles and how to safely use them. Other courses for more experienced people are also available. Once passed you'll be given a certificate that makes you exempt from taking any testing through the DMV. These courses are all throughout the state of Louisiana.

If you just moved to the state of Louisiana recently but have a motorcycle endorsement from another state you may be eligible to waive any testing. Get in contact with your local DMV for more information.

Louisiana Motorcycle License Test Tips

The first part of your motorcycle endorsement is the knowledge test. Pulling information from the official manual, this 25 multiple choice question exam will go through questions like what to do in certain situations, how to swerve correctly, and others related to the operation of your motorcycle. In order to pass this portion, you must score at least an 80%, or 20 questions. Using this website will get you up to date on what information you'll need to know for the test, proving to the state of Louisiana that you are a safe driver.

The next part of your motorcycle endorsement will have you on the machine itself and showing an examiner what you are capable of. You'll be tested on multiple parameters ranging from communication, knowledge of your motorcycle, and your ability to make critical decisions. An examiner will give you a set of instructions on a closed course that will score you on completion of these objectives in a timely yet safe manner. Skills tests are carried out through the Louisiana Department of Transportation.
