Motorcycle License

How To Get an Alabama Motorcycle License

The state of Alabama requires a class M endorsement on your driver license to legally drive a motorcycle. Drivers between the ages of 16 and 18 also need parental consent. An endorsement requires successful completion of the knowledge exam administered by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) or successful completion of a motorcycle safety course.

It is recommended that you review the Alabama motorcycle operator manual as it addresses legal requirements and tips concerning safety and etiquette that are particular to traveling by motorcycle.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers courses suitable for all 50 states. The Alabama Motorcycle Safety Program has several locations available around the state and you can find more information about their locations and available courses on their website. Successfully completing an eCourse or RiderCourse will enhance your skills and, in some cases, substitute for a license qualification.

If you are licensed to drive a motorcycle in another state, then your process should be less time-consuming than others applying for a license. All you need is your valid out-of-state license, another primary form of identification (birth certificate, passport, etc.), your social security card, and payment of transfer and licensing fees.

All fees are to be paid in cash.

Alabama Motorcycle License Test Tips

The questions on the Alabama motorcycle test concern several aspects of riding a motorcycle like the potential stopping power the front brake supplies, positioning of feet or how to properly swerve, the most important time to flash your brake light or how to handle a flat tire while riding, how to avoid normal traffic issues, right-of-way and signaling, and avoiding imminent accidents. Even questions that may seem irrelevant like percentage of accidents that occur or fit a certain demographic. If it is in the manual, then it could be on the test. The Alabama on-cycle skills test takes place off-road and focuses on your ability to perform specific tasks like adjusting speed, braking for normal and quick stops, and braking for normal and quick swerves and turns.
