How To Get A mississippi Commercial Drivers License

Mississippi requires drivers of certain vehicles to obtain a commercial driver’s license or CDL. These commercial vehicles include single or combinations with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds, vehicles intended to carry 15 or more passengers excluding the driver, and any vehicles carrying hazardous materials that requires a placard. Any resident of Mississippi who currently holds a Class R license may apply for a commercial driver’s license. Every applicant will need two identifications of proof that they are indeed a resident of the state of Mississippi.Mississippi residents that are 17 years of age or older are eligible for a CDL for intrastate driving. Residents must be 21 years or older to have interstate CDL driving privileges and/or a Hazmat endorsement. All applicants must possess a Medical Examiner’s Certificate or DOT medical card.

There are certain offenses that will disqualify a driver from obtaining their CDL. These include:

  • Possessing a driver’s license from another state.
  • Conviction of impaired operation of a commercial motor vehicle within 24 months prior to your application.
  • Canceled, revoked, suspended, or denied license.
  • If you are disqualified from CDL privileges in another state.

CDL applicants for the state of Mississippi must complete both a written knowledge exam as well as a practical skills test to receive their license.

mississippi CDL License Test Tips

All applicants will have to take one or more knowledge tests to acquire their CDL Class and necessary endorsements. Classes A, B, and C all require applicants to complete a 50 question written exam. Class A drivers will need to complete an additional 20 questions about combination vehicles. To remove the Air Brake Restriction drivers must pass a 25 question assessment. Endorsements require knowledge tests as well. Passenger, Double/Triples, and Tank Vehicle Endorsements each require a 20 question test. The School Bus Endorsement knowledge test is 25 questions and the HazMat Endorsement is 30 questions. All knowledge tests must be passed with a score of 80 percent or higher.

The practical skills test evaluates the applicant in three main areas. These include the pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving. The applicant must pass all of these areas in order to be eligible for their CDL. To receive the necessary endorsements, applicants must drive the type of vehicle they are seeking the endorsement for at the time of the practical skills assessment.
