How To Get A maryland Commercial Drivers License

Applicants can apply for any CDL and necessary endorsements when they are 21 years of age or older. Applicants may apply for a restricted CDL at the age of 18 years old. This restricted CDL limits the driver to intrastate driving and doesn’t allow HazMat Certification, driving double or triple trailers, or driving school buses with children on board. All applicants must possess a current DOT medical card to be considered for their CDL.

All drivers that have the following issues are considered disqualified from receiving their Maryland CDL.

  • Having a current license suspended, revoked, denied, or canceled.
  • Possessing more than one state driver’s license.
  • Having restricted CDL driving privileges in another state.
  • Being convicted of driving impaired within 24 months prior to submitting a CDL application.

All applicants must successfully pass both a skills test and a knowledge test in order to receive their Maryland CDL. To receive specific endorsements, individuals must pass examinations about the endorsement as well.

maryland CDL License Test Tips

Knowledge tests are required to receive Class A, B, and C CDLs and endorsements. All applicants must take a 50 question test and pass with a score of 40 or higher to receive their CDL permit. Those applying for a Class A license must take a 70 question test, with 20 of the questions pertaining directly to combination vehicles. All endorsements require their own specific examination that has been 20 and 30 questions. All assessments must be passed with a score of 80 or higher.

Each applicant is required to complete a three-section skills assessment. This assessment is comprised of a vehicle inspection, driving test, and basic control test. To pass the skills portion of the CDL assessment, applicants must successfully show their knowledge in all three areas. Those seeking vehicle-specific endorsements must take the skills test in that specific type of vehicle they want the endorsement for.
