How To Get A maine Commercial Drivers License

Applicants can apply for their CDL at the age of 21 years old. Those who are between the ages of 18 years old and 21 years old can apply for a CDL with some restrictions. These drivers cannot possess a HazMat Endorsement, drive doubles or triples, or drive out of the state of Maine. All applicants for a Maine CDL must possess a Medical Examiner’s Certificate or DOT medical card.

Any of the following instances will disqualify a driver from obtaining their CDL in the state of Maine.

  • Having a currently suspended, denied, canceled, or revoked driver’s license.
  • Having more than one driver’s license from multiple states.
  • Being convicted of driving impaired in a commercial vehicle 24 months prior to applying.
  • Having CDL driving privileges revoked in another state.

Applicants applying for a Maine CDL must successfully complete the necessary knowledge and skills test to receive their new driving privileges.

maine CDL License Test Tips

To obtain a Maine CDL and any special endorsements individuals must take one or more knowledge tests. To get a Class A, B, and C commercial driver’s license you must pass a 50 question general knowledge test relating to commercial driving. Class A applicants will need to answer an additional 20 questions about combination driving. When an applicant is seeking endorsements, they will be required to complete one additional knowledge test per endorsement. Tank Vehicle, Doubles, Triples, and Passenger Endorsements all have 20 questions assessments. School Bus Endorsements and Air Brake Restriction Removals require a 25 question test.

Once an applicant passes all necessary knowledge tests, they will be required to complete a skills test. This tests the applicant’s knowledge of hands on driving experience, vehicle inspection, and basic vehicle control. All applicants applying for Passenger Transport and School Bus Endorsements as well as removal of the Air Brakes Restriction must pass an additional skills test.
