How To Get A kentucky Commercial Drivers License

All applicants must possess a valid Kentucky Class D driver’s license and meet all the below requirements to be eligible for their CDL. Applicants who are age 18 may apply for their CDL license. These drivers are restricted to in-state driving, may not operate school buses, or haul hazardous materials. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older to drive out-of-state and receive their School Bus and/or Hazardous Materials Endorsement(s). All drivers applying for their commercial driver’s license must provide the Division of Driver Licensing with a valid DOT medical card.

Drivers who fall into the below categories are disqualified from receiving their CDL:

  • Having more than one driver’s license.
  • Current license is suspended or revoked.
  • Being convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol within 24 months of submitting an application.
  • Being convicted of two or more serious moving violations within a 36 month period.

All CDL applicants are required to complete both knowledge tests as well as a practical skills test.

kentucky CDL License Test Tips

General knowledge tests for Class B and C driver applicants are comprised of 50 questions. Those applying for a Class A CDL are required to complete the initial 50 questions as well as 20 additional questions about combinations. Each endorsement requires the applicant to complete a separate knowledge assessment. Endorsements for Doubles/Triples, School Bus, Tank, and Passenger Transport are comprised of 20 questions. The Hazardous Materials Endorsement requires a 30 question test. Lastly, the removal of the Air Brake Restriction is comprised of 25 questions. All assessments must be passed with a score of 80 percent or better.

All applicants will need to take a skills test that assesses their ability to operate their intended vehicle. Once applicants receive their Kentucky CDL permit after completing the knowledge assessment(s), they may apply for the skills test 14 days later. The skills test is comprised of three different parts that will all be assessed in one testing session. These areas include the pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and driving test. All applicants must successfully show their skills in all three of these areas to be considered eligible for their CDL.
