How To Get an Arkansas Commercial Drivers License

All residents looking to receive their Arkansas-issued CDL must have a valid operator's license and meet all the eligibility requirements listed below.

Arkansas residents can apply for their CDL at the age of 18. However, they may not obtain their Hazmat, Doubles/Triples, or School Bus endorsement until the age of 21 years old. In addition, only those over the age of 21 are eligible for commercial driving across state lines, or interstate commerce.

As per the FMCSA, all applicants must have a DOT physical card entailing their physical competence to drive a commercial vehicle. This physical card can be obtained for any one of the many physicians that are approved by the FMCSA.

There are certain instances where an applicant will be automatically disqualified from receiving their CDL. These include:

  • Having multiple operator's licenses.
  • Possessing a revoked, canceled, suspended, or denied driver's license.
  • Being restricted form commercial driving privileges in another state.

All commercial driver license applicants must successfully pass a skills test as well as one or more knowledge tests to obtain their CDL.

Applicants for the Class A license are required to complete an additional 20 questions about combination vehicles. Applicants who are seeking endorsements will be required to take one general knowledge test per endorsement. The number of test questions will range from 20 to 30 depending on the endorsement sought. Removing the Air Brake Restriction will require a 25 question assessment. All knowledge tests must be passed with a score of 80 percent or better.
