How To Get an Alaska Commercial Drivers License

Applicants are eligible for their CDL at the age of 18 years old. However, it's important to realize that CDLs issued for individuals under the age of 21 are restricted to intrastate commerce. Only those 21 years of age or older are eligible for interstate commerce. In addition, drivers must be 21 years old to drive a school bus, double or triple trailers, and obtain their Hazmat Certification.

All commercial driver's license applicants must get a physical examination by a FMCSA-Certified Medical Examiner. The examiner will give the applicant a DOT medical card if they are assessed as in good health to be driving a commercial vehicle.Any applicants that have the following are considered disqualified from receiving an Alaska-issued CDL:

  • Currently disqualified from commercial driving privileges in another state.
  • Currently have more than one operator's license in Alaska or any other states.
  • Operator's license is currently suspended, denied, canceled, or revoked.

Those attempting Class A Certification must complete 20 additional questions about driving combination vehicles. Those looking for endorsements or the removal of the Air Brake restriction will be required to take additional knowledge assessments. These assessments range between 20 and 30 questions regarding the specific endorsement topic. All knowledge tests must be passed with a score of 80 percent or better for a resident to be eligible for their commercial driver's license.A skills test is required of all applicants to showcase their ability to operate a commercial vehicle. The skills assessment includes a pre-trip inspection, on-road driving test, and basic control operations test. Those seeking endorsements for Passengers, School Bus, or removal of the Air Brake Restriction will need to utilize the particular vehicle the endorsement is for when performing their skills test. For example, to remove the Air Brake Restriction an individual must take the skills test in a vehicle that is equipped with air brakes.
