Truck driving school requirements
Most truck driving schools will require that you meet some basic requirements prior to enrolling in their school. This is to ensure that you will be fully qualified to apply for a Class A CDL license once you graduate from their program. This may include:
- Passing a Department of Transportation medical exam
- Having a Missouri Class D drivers license – what you use to legally drive a car
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Prove United States citizenship or identification proving the ability to work in the US
- Speak and read English
- Do not have serious traffic offenses on your driving record

However you can expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 – $7,000 for a CDL school. Very few people pay the full price of the training – most schools allow you to pay for schooling over a set period time with no additional interest required.
Most people are eligible for some type of scholarship or grant through the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development. Check their website for up to date grants and scholarships as well as filing deadlines for each of the scholarships. You should also search for private grants and scholarships that may apply to your particular financial circumstances, financial aide through your truck driving school, as well as federal grants. If you were a member of the military, you should look into the GI Bill grant, the Workforce Investment Act Grant, or the Women in Trucking Foundation scholarship.
