Why use a truck driving school?
People who are interested in becoming truck drivers typically have two options when it comes to obtaining their CDL Class A license: Receive training through a trucking company, or enroll in a CDL school.
When you receive training through a trucking company, the training is advertised as being free. However, you typically have to be employed by the company for a set period of time in order to receive CDL certification and your wages may be reduced in order to cover the cost of your training. Your career path is also somewhat predefined if you use a trucking company, while using a CDL school offers much more flexibility when it comes to career options after completion of training.
CDL schools are held to a high standard and have a structured system that ensure a high graduation and job placement rate. Many programs have fast-track options that allow you to complete training in three weeks or less. Many also allow you to take your time and complete training on weekends or at your own pace. CDL schools typically offer a mix of classroom and hands-on training. They provide you with the documents and study guides that you need to pass the written CDL exam while offering one-on-one training on a driving range and on the road that is necessary for you to demonstrate during your road test.
Financial Assistance
Many Alaska residents qualify for diesel technology scholarships that can be applied towards a CDL school. These include:
- Tony Prockish Memorial Scholarship
- Edward M. Peace Scholarship
- Norbert Muller Scholarship
Your CDL school may also be able to provide details on additional state and federal scholarships that can help lower the total cost of tuition. Contact the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education to see if there are any scholarships, grants, or financial aid available that can be applied to an Alaska truck driving school.
