Drivers License

How To Get An Alabama Driver’s License

In Alabama, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Drivers License Department is the authority of driver licenses and driving test examinations.

All those that operate a motor vehicle in the state Alabama must have a license. All those who wish to be licensed in the state of Alabama must successfully complete an Alabama’s drivers examination. All those who had not been licensed previously in Alabama, or had not renewed their license three years must take and pass the examination.

Drivers who are 15 years old may obtain a Learner’s License after passing a Learner’s License examination. After doing so, an individual may get an Alabama Learner’s License. This license will carry a “Y” restriction. A fifteen year old driver who has earned a Learner’s License may operate a motor vehicle only if another licensed driver aged 21 years or older accompanies the new driver in the front passenger seat of the vehicle. The “Y” restriction is valid for 4 years.

Additionally, drivers may obtain a Learner’s License if they are 16 years old or older. Drivers who are 16 and older must pass the Learner’s License examination successfully to obtain a Learner’s License. Learner’s License drivers may only be eligible to drive if they are accompanied by another properly licensed driver sitting in the front passenger seat of the vehicle. This license is valid for 4 years.

How To Pass the Alabama Driving Permit Test

If you’re concerned about how you’ll perform when test day arrives, here are some tips that may prove useful as you prepare:

  • Practice, practice, practice. This means you should be practicing with your learner’s permit and also taking as many practice tests as you can to familiarize yourself with test questions and road signs.
  • Gather up all of your necessary paperwork like your proof of registration, insurance and permit the night before the exam and have them ready to go so you’re not scrambling to find them in the morning.

  • Practice like you’ll be tested. If possible, drive the same car and in the same area where you’ll be tested on exam day. If you’re familiar with the vehicle, speed limits, and potential hazards you’ll be much more comfortable and less prone to making silly mistakes.
  • Give your car an inspection a few days before the exam – make sure the windshield and windows are clean, adjust your mirrors and check the AC, turn signal, wipers, lights, defrost, emergency brake, horn and hazard lights to make sure they’re all in functional condition.
